Lagoon Serenity Retreat

Lagoon Serenity Retreat is a Cape-style house on Links Drive, wraparound veranda and a bay window, standing back across a wide lawn behind a hedge with the mountains rising past it.

That veranda is the front of the house and most of its argument. Wicker sofas and a coffee table sit at one end, a dining table with wicker chairs at the other, both facing out over the lawn and the trees. A covered walkway runs beside the grass. There is parking.

Beams and a skylight

A long dining table sits under a vaulted, beamed ceiling with the lounge beyond it, upholstered sofas drawn round a fireplace. A second living room is bright beneath a skylight with grey sofas in it. A bookshelf has been styled with model sailboats and a lantern, and a further table takes bench seating in front of it. The kitchen is plain and practical: stove, cabinets, blinds, tiled floor and a washing machine.

Bay windows and French doors

The bedrooms are many and each has its own way out. Glass sliding doors onto the veranda from one, French doors onto a furnished terrace from another, a bay window with an armchair and white linen in a third. There is a twin with a red throw and framed boat artwork, a single with a bench seat and blue striped curtains, a queen with floral cushions. A dressing area runs between built-in closets. Bathrooms are numerous and mostly plain, several with corner tubs in pink tile.

Out along the veranda

The covered deck carries wicker chairs and a dining table above the lawn, and the veranda continues round the house with seating spaced along it. The garden is wide and level, planted at its edges and open in the middle.

Links Drive and around

The island is flat and residential and the Armstrong Road causeway carries everything on and off it. Steenbok Nature Reserve sits on the island, free to enter, open at any hour. There are guest houses here if cooking is not the plan.

Best with

A large party spread across a lot of rooms, or a family who will simply live on that veranda.
